Common Core Standards

Many of you may not have heard of Common Core State Standards, but if you still have a school librarian in your community, they know all about the standards.  Forty-five states including Kansas have adopted the standards that will take affect in 2014.  The authors of this initiative are the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, and the Council of Chief State School Officers.  The standards emphasize access to quality nonfiction for students.  In light of this initiative, it may be time to evaluate your children’s nonfiction collection and decide if the information on the shelf is up-to-date. Balloons Over Broadway: the True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade  by Melissa Sweet is a great example of a well written nonfiction book for ages 4 and above.  If you need recommendations, here is a link to a good article about nonfiction award winners.
