Emergency and Disaster Planning
for Public Libraries
and Their Communities

Description:
Attendees will learn how to create an emergency plan for their library and how to incorporate community partners and patrons into that plan. According to the Stafford Act of 2011, libraries are designated “an essential community function” during an emergency. It’s important that the library, community partners, and patrons are aware of the emergency plan in advance and that everyone knows their role.

Attendees will be provided with local (Kansas) examples of starting the emergency planning process and tools to begin organizing their own emergency plan. What are your library’s essential functions? What can you provide patrons and emergency responders before, during, and after an emergency/disaster?
